In 2000 Joyce H. Johnson was Director of The Transportation Institute, School of Business and Economics, North Carolina A&T State University.  At that time she was a 27-year veteran of NCA&TSU whose expertise as a teacher, researcher, and provider of public information was focused on preparing a core of well rounded, diverse professionals for the future of transportation. Johnson states, “I firmly believe that university research has a special place in the world of transportation research. Where else can pressing questions and innovations facing the industry be debated and tested in an unbiased setting? What better avenue is available to attract, educate, and funnel the best and brightest minds among our young people into the transportation industry?” Johnson has been instrumental in expanding the number of African Americans, women, and other underrepresented groups involved in transportation.
